A lost opportunity of vandalism

I am thoroughly amused at this piece of news.

First of all, how sweet of the Local council to suggest that “such acts shamed the perpetrators”. As though the vandals are going to read the news item and think, “Fuck, that was a shameful thing to do…”

Sweeter still are the comments that have collected below the article. Their reactions sound hilariously similar to those we heard constantly on the news after September 11th. Get over it guys, it’s just a bit of paint, I’m sure it can be removed.

(Also, check out what J. Borg and ABC had to say – commenting about some wooden railings, trying to be funny and going against the grain lol. How lame that ABC thinks he’s clever and cultured.)

But there are two things that really did strike me about this act of vandalism.

First of all – how uncreative! A splash of paint? I mean seriously… couldn’t you have at least written some sort of message or drawn something funny? If you know it’s going to make the news, why not have fun with it and be a bit creative.

Secondly – Why Dingli? Why a chapel? Why in general? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there’s a valid reason. Maybe you were raped by the priest as a little child or you wanted to develop the land into a superclub and MEPA wouldn’t let you break down the bloody church. Or you just felt that the “scenic” area was being visually polluted by a chapel and you think that if we’re going to mix up Church and State politically, we don’t have to do it physically by taking up half our state’s land for chapels, Churches and other religious buildings.

The point is, I’m sure there’s a valid reason. You could just be a hunter who’s pissed off at the world, for all I know. But that is the point! We’re never going to know! Not only are we never going to know who you are, but we’re never going to know what you are trying to say. Because all you did was splash some paint on a small chapel in a remote part of Malta.

And now a CCTV camera will inevitably be placed there and a real vandal with some sort of message is going to lose his/her chance to use Dingli chapel as his/her canvas. The Dingli local council is right, you should be ashamed of yourself.

One of my favourite bits of graffiti in Rue something or other reads “La vraie pollution c’est votre style de vie”.

ABC THINKS he’s clever and cultured? In relative terms he is. Contento lui, contenti tutti.
